External hard drive issues after upgrading to Mountain Lion

I've been having difficulties with my external hard drive since upgrading to Mountain Lion yesterday. The drive was working perfectly fine under Lion before I started the upgrade process.



The issue I'm having is that Mountain Lion won't fully recognize the disk. It's a 2TB hard drive, partitionned in two; one part used for file storage, the other one being used by Time Machine. Now when I connect the drive, it only recognize either of the two partitions, not both. It also doesn't let me use the partition used by Time Machine as it should anymore, giving me the error that it cannot connect to the drive. When it recognizes the other partition, I can only browse to the root folders, if I try to go inside them and retrieve data, it finds nothing. Though both partitions show the correct amount of memory remaining and used. Also, they don't show up in Disk Utility.



I'm thinking it might just be an issue with the firmware used for my hard drive enclosure, would that make any sense?

I too am having difficulties with my 1tb 3.5" drive in Rocketfish enclosure. I get the "you did not properly disconnect the drive" warning every time I try to launch a folder and then the drive icon will disappear from the desktop. However, when I plug the drive into my backup machine still running Lion, there are no connection issues whatsoever. Mountain Lion is buggy as hell for me...not sure what everyone did different who gave it the glowing stability reviews.

@ GAdawg22, I'm having exactly the same issue as you -- drive shows up, open it up, but can't get into any folders without it disconnecting. You've given me hope - going to check the drive on the work computer running Lion. No other mention of this on line. Arg.

I just tried to upgrade my Mac Mini server to Mountain Lion. When Mountain Lion is installed, the /Network/Servers/server.example.com/Volumes folder contains only one external disk, the one with my user folders, but there is nothing in it. Even after you install the Mountain Lion Server, the home directories of the users are not accessible. No user can log in, except the System admin whose user folder is in the main system disk and not the external one. Apple, fix this please!!!

Im having same issues described above. After upgrading, Lion is giving messages in one of the DATA drive my 2TB( GoFlex 3 partitions) . I used disk utility to check for errors and even erased the data on that partition. Disk Utility finds no errors but i keep getting messages about drive is not eject properly or something.

I just spent an hour working with an Apple help desk technician on this same problem and here's the solution he suggested that's now working beautifully for me:

Go to System Preferences/Energy Saver. Deselect the box that says "Put hard disks to sleep when possible". Close the lock when done.

I haven't been able to back up or export large files for many months. I've been on many forums asking for help, been to the Apple store twice, reinstalled OSX, used several programs that promised to clean your system - all without any luck....until now!

How could this tiny little check box cause so many problems and how can Apple let this happen. But a BIG thanks to you for finally solving my external HD problem!!!!!

Sounds more like the creator of these externals 'let it happen' not Apple. Hope you sent them feedback so they can fix their issues
