Does Your New iPhone 5 Already Have Scratches On The Back? [Let's Talk]

Even though the iPhone 5 has only been in most owners' pockets for four days, a lot of people have complained that the back plate on their iPhone 5 has a ton of scratches. Apple says the back of iPhone 5 is made of anodized 6000 series aluminum — the same material used in Apple notebooks — so it shouldn't scratch that much, but if you've seen this picture, that doesn't appear to be the case.

How's the back of your iPhone 5 holding up? Does it have a few scars already, or has it been just fine? Are you going to get a case, or does a little wear and tear give your device some integrity?

Yes, it does. Just around the black "beautiful machined" frame. Looks like it is paint that has just come off the frame edge. And 1 or 2 scratches on the back. Not very happy. Might go into the Apple Store in London tonight and ask for a replacement. Not good enough for 3 days use.

No, because I'm not silly enough to leave my brand new $700 device unprotected. It went in a clear see-thru case (so I could still show it off) as soon as I got it, and I also put a screen protector on it. I have the white one which I've read isn't as prone to scratches though.

Yep on the black frame, a few barely there silver marks. Still - that shouldn't happen in 3 days! I'm waiting on my Grove case...but almost want to buy a temporary one til October.

I've stuck mines in a protective case so unlikely to get scratches and none noticed on initial inspection. Can't believe this wasn't picked up during testing, unbelievable really. If they end up scratching easily surely the resale value will drop significantly too.

May i ask you what that protective see thru case was called?! I really want a case but i dont wanna cover up the back!

Also, i havent gotten scratches, then again i dont put my keys in the same pocket my phone is in. Even, so im still protective of placing it on a rough surface.

I feel like this is antenna gate all over again! except its scratches this time around.

yes! as soon as I took it out of the box, I pulled it out and saw it already had scratches! i'm so mad, i'm actually going to AT&T to trade from the black iPhone to the white one....

Yep, there are scratches, I was being so careful with it over the weekend until I could buy a case today, and a car bumped into the back of me on the motorway! Cue scratches on my iPhone. I wonder if I can claim for a new one on their insurance??? :-)

Nope! I have the white one with no case and it's completely fine. Looks like dumbasses are putting their phones in their pockets with keys or something. My phone always has a pocket to itself, lol

No scratches but a duff speaker playing music on loud speaker on full the volume fluctuates am not the only one either you don't notice it till u play it in quiet room

Any anodized aluminum surface will scratch, does not matter if it's a phone or a laptop. it just so happens that black (or slate) anodizing will show all of the scratches more because the aluminum underneath is silver. I've seen other non-Apple anodized equipment scratch so I picked up the white one instead. Yes, any dirt will show more, but the scratches will show less. It's six of one half dozen of the other.

Black iPhone 5. No scratches. It is treated like a newborn baby. I carry it in a fleece sleeve that I made and at home I lay it down on fabric to avoid scratches. InCase slider case on order.

Hi BigLama, I just got a cheapo case on eBay. In my opinion, best place to get a case for your devices because they're so cheap that you can buy so many. :)

I might trade in the black for the white. It's sad that the paint on the chamfered edges scratch so easily. Oh well...
