Heavy Lag in OS X 10.8.2

When switching between various programs and while using the Mail client, I get very heavy lag. I do have a few things running in the back ground but didn't think it would make a difference. I have a Macbook Pro 2.53 GHz core 2 duo w/4gb RAM. Genius bar has run many many tests and everything appears to be fine.

Any tips or things I should look at to improve performance?
