Hackulous has announced that it has shut down Installous, the one-stop shop for “cracked” or pirated apps and games on iOS. The team blames “stagnant” forums and the difficulty in moderating them as the reason behind its decision to kill the service, which will undoubtedly be a huge victory against iOS software piracy. At least for now.

Glad to see this go. I was tired of explaining to the trolls that there are many other legitimate reasons to jailbreak an iDevice; added functionality, fixing broken iOS features, changing the default browser/mapping/other app, parental controls, larger & nested folders, etc.

I'm still on iOS 5 due to the added features. My son won't let me upgrade his iPhone to iOS 6 for the same reason.

While I don't take kindly to hacking to steal apps, I was one of those early Installous users that used it for downloading and previewing games before I would buy. Especially as games got updates to them more regularly it was such a hassle to keep a game from Installous and have to update it. I have been jailbreak free for a two years now and I don't think I will ever go back unless some hacks come out that really stand out as needed for work. Stability was also a big reason I haven't jailbroken as my device would often crash and that was never fun.

I only ever Jb'd my iPhone to get the TomTom app for free, at over £100 at the time it was way too expensive for me. It dropped down to £49 which I was happy to pay for so I un-Jb'd my iPhone and bought it and since then i've bought a hell of a lot more apps I would probably have otherwise 'stolen'. Most developers put a lot of time and money into their apps and they deserve recompense.
